Sustainable Pens

We’ve been very active at the Fo Guang Shan Temple lately. We’ve been participating in all sorts of activities — Chinese New Year celebration, selling our “No Self, No Sufferer” shirts (I’ll post photos of the shirt soon teehee), Thursday reading club meetings, month-end book club meeting, Chinese lantern-making contest, essay writing contest, reading club out-of-town trip and of course attending the prayers/service. Sounds like I’m in a church. LOL. But I don’t consider Buddhism as a religion. For me it’s a practice. Okay, I’ll save this topic for another post.

Right now I just want to show you something cool. teehee. I mentioned earlier that Mr. Snuggles and I participated in the lantern-making contest and our chapter came up with a lantern made with ballpen cases. Our group only used the cases and not the inks inside. I was so eager to get my hands on the ballpen inks (I don’t know if that’s what you call the “bones” or “skeleton” of a ballpen. haha) because I’ve been planning to make a pen out of old newspapers. I didn’t want to buy my own pens, discard the cases and take the inks. That would not be earth-friendly at all. :) The discarded inks from our lantern project gave me the perfect opportunity to make my own sustainable pens! woot woot!

So how do we make a sustainable pen out of these ballpen inks?

Easy! Just get your newspaper and roll it on your ballpen inks like your do your sushi! Teehee. You can even make a cap for the pen!

I used newspaper on one pen and leftover thick paper on the other. Both worked really well.

I couldn’t find our old, junk shop-worthy magazines (translation: I was too excited to make the pens than look for them LOL) so I didn’t get to make one. But I’ll sure try making one made with magazine. They’re much more colorful and glossy. :)

But they both turned out awesome, don’t you think so?

To shape the paper to resemble a ballpen case, you can lower the paper each time you roll so you’ll end up with a cone-ish tip, just like a real pen!

And I’ve gotta tell you, it’s sturdy too and won’t crumple in your hand when you write.

Look how awesome it is!

Cool right? I’ve been using them the whole day. I wrote with it, drew with it, doodled with it and scribbled with it. Unfortunately, the only color I have of the pens are red…. so yeah, I’m so ready for Valentines. LOL!

And because our group has around 400++ of these inks waiting to be discarded, I’m going to ask them if we can do this for the remaining inks! :) Each pen took me approximately 5 minutes or less to make.

Okidoki, that’s enough excitement to last me a week, I guess. (Yes, I am THAT simple. teehee)

Have a wonderful weekend ahead!

Felt Travel Sewing Kit

You know the ones you get from hotels? Well, I’ve always wanted to create my own mini travel sewing kit that is not the throw-away type and would not look flimsy inside my bag.

I’ve finally made my little wish come true with this cute kit! It’s so easy to make that I’m now thinking of this as a great giveaway for your girlfriends or daughters. I actually made this a few months ago together with all the other felt projects (you can see them here and here) which I made during my felt-frenzy days. teehee.

I love how simple and yet functional the design is. :)

I found a lovely hand-painted bead form my stash of beads and used it together with a thin rope to close the sewing kit.

I have yet to fill up the thread area. teehee. I loosely sewed a couple of buttons on the left area and then attached various needles on the right.

Before I attached the thread area, I enclosed a thick cardboard in the middle of the thread holder so that it will stay firm and won’t look crumpled.

I actually forgot that I need to make zigzag cuts in the bottom part of the thread holder as well. I made a cut that was too close to the sewed area so I really couldn’t make those zigzag cuts anymore. No biggie, on my next sewing kit, I’ll make sure that it’s there. teehee.

All the holders — thread, button and needle holders were sewn on one side only so that it can be lifted up from the kit. This way, it won’t be too hard to attach anything to them. :)

You might be wondering how I tied the satin rope around the kit to close it so I prepared a short video to show you I close it. I initially wanted to use Velcro or a button but I thought this would be more different not to mention easier to make. Here’s how I tied it together:

From the looks of my simple travel sewing kit, it’s really easy to figure out how to make it. :P

However, drop me a line below on the comments section if you feel you need a how-to so that I can make one for you. :)

Pure Soap Bottle Onesie

My nephew Iko was baptized yesterday! I know he’ll grow into a happy and kind boy because his parents and godparents (one of them is my brother teehee) will always be there to guide him. Anyway, our organic personal care store, Spa Ingredients, will be launching a new product which is called Pure Soap. It can be used on almost anything that needs sudsing. It can be a shampoo, a liquid soap, dishwashing soap, etc. It’s organic and it’s super duper mild that I feel like it’s not doing its job when I try to use it as a liquid bath soap. Teehee. But it actually does — keeps me clean and scent-free which I love!

The timing was just perfect because our Pure Soap can be a great gift for my nephew who was going to be cleansed of his original sin and will be super duper “pure”. What better way to keep him utterly pure than to bathe him with an organic bath gel! :P

Since we’re still in the process of looking for a nice and simple bottle that can go with our new product Pure Soap, I had to make use of what we have on hand which is a 100ml glass vial. I wasn’t able to take a photo of the bottle with Pure Soap but to describe it, the liquid bath gel is clear and the bottle is a fat one with a small mouth. To make our simple and meaningful gift become a more interesting one, I designed something that will totally “suit” the baby-feel. :)

I designed a cute onesie for the bottle and stenciled my nephew’s name on the front. I was a bit lazy with the buttons that are supposed to hold the onesie together so I just took a safety pin and attached it to the bottom. I just love how it turned out!

My cousin can even use the bottle onesie as a souvenir and even use it to embellish Iko’s scrapbook (if he had any). :)

Let me know what you think! If I feel that you really liked the onesie, I can make a pattern for you guys :P

P.S.  Here are a couple of photos from the Christening :)

My cousin Daff with her husband JP and their two cute monkies — Iki (my goddaughter) and Iko (my brother Ino’s godson)

Iko’s sound asleep! So cute!

His Mommy steals a kiss. :P

And there he is… wide awake! Look at those big eyes!

Remember the tea bag favors we made last weekend? Well, here’s how they wrapped them up.

Oh, the yummy food! They stuffed us with very delicious Filipino and Western dishes.

And this is the very happy me, after I stole a delectable cupcake from the cupcake stand. Teehee. Oh, that’s Mr. Snuggles beside me. He got a cupcake too.

Have a great week guys!
