30-day Crafting Frenzy #21: Coffee Stencil

I made this a few weeks ago but hesitated on posting this because it did not turn out as I hope it would. Nevertheless, I believe in failing forward so I will make another coffee stencil pretty soon. :)

It actually looks pretty except for the excessive cinnamon haha.

The pattern would have been nice if I took enough care in sifting the cinnamon powder onto the stencil and making the stencil a little less wide. :) Still, it’s a very pretty design. And next time, I might use chocolate or nutmeg. :)

There are coffee stencils sold online at Coffee Stencil but I find them too costly when I know I can make them at home. Although their designs are also really creative. Here are few of the best ones I liked:

coffee stencils

Don’t they look cool? :)

Well, they’re $10 each for a set. But for this amount, I can already make almost a hundred designs using OHP films and cinnamon powder! This is exactly why I love making these kind of crafts myself!

To make these Coffee Stencils yourself, here’s a quick how-to:

1. Trace the top of the mug you’re going to use on paper. This will serve as the space where we can limit our design.

2. Draw your design onto the circle you just traced. As you can see with coffee stencils, it can be anything you want. Although I’d like to point out a very obvious tip which is to limit your design to smaller lines. See CoffeeStencil.com’s designs? Theirs have smaller spaces and narrow lines. This regulates the powder you’re going to put in. This is what I should have done with my design. I have learned well. Hihi.

3. Once you have your design ready for stenciling, you can now get your OHP Transparency film and lay it over the design. Use a tape to keep the paper and the film together in place.

Check out my cute sticky tape! I bought it in Divisoria for P30 for a set of 7. How cool and cheap is that?!

4. Use a cutter or an Exacto knife to cut through your design.

5. Once your stencil is done, you can start making your cappuccino or latte. We need coffee that has froth on top so we have a canvass for our design. There are great recipes online so go ahead and Google it!

6. While making your cappuccino, clean out the stencil by running it through some water and dish washing liquid. ;) As soon your coffee’s done, place it in your special mug and lay the stencil over it.

7. Get your cinnamon powder (or whatever powder you want, like chocolate, nutmeg, or whichever works well with your taste) and be careful as you put it through the strainer. It would be best if the strainer you’ll be using has very small holes. This will ensure a very fine print on your coffee. My mistake with what I did was I used the regular strainer (the one you use for noodles LOL) where the holes are very big. Anyway, just sift the powder and gently pat the sifter all over the design.

In my excitement, I was not able to get a picture while I was making it. LOL.

But in my next coffee stencil, I’ll surely get a photo of the process. I hope you can picture it from how I described it.

Have fun decorating your coffee and surprising your loved ones!

p.s. I can just imagine someone receiving a coffee so early in the morning with “Marry Me?” stenciled on top. How cute!

p.p.s If you’re hosting a breakfast party with your friends, family or having a slumber party for your kids, this can be a great accent! Your guests will be surprised when they see a cute print or a monogram of the celebrant’s name on top of their coffee or hot cocoa!

Binondo Chinatown Finds

The whole family, including my Titos and Titas, went to Binondo last Sunday as a going-away food tour (instead of just having a party at home lol) for my Tita Kelly. She went back to the States two days ago. Boohoo.

I was supposed to take photos of the food we ate and bought but I totally forgot all about it. However, I managed to take some photos of the stuff that’s left. LOL.

Check out our Binondo Chinatown finds below. :)

We bought a big box of Green Tea for P120 only at Bee Tin Grocery. 100 bags for that price is dirt cheap! We now drink Green Tea all through out the day. :)

This Olive preserve has always been my favorite. When I was a kid, we would always buy Champoy, Dikiam and Kiamoy among other Chinese preserves.  And while I loved all those, I find the salty and sour taste of this olive preserve quite addicting. This is the first time I bought the pitted ones because I’ve always enjoyed sucking on the seed and getting all the olive meat out using my teeth. How unsightly, I know. haha.

My Ma used to make the best green mango preserves. I’ve never tasted anything like hers so I didn’t bother buying a bag of those. Besides, I’ll try to make a jar of it myself. As soon as I get the recipe from my Aunt. (note to self: get the recipe and keep it. LOL)

Pork floss or Mahu has been a family favorite ever since I was a child. My mom would put this in on bread slathered with Mayonnaise and include this in our snack bags along with her other homemade goodies like Polvoron. My friends would always ask what it was and how it tasted. haha. Good thing they’re now being sold in bakeshops here in the Metro.

And my favorite find of all is my vintage-looking Lavender Prickly Heat Powder! We (my Titas and I) all bought a can of this powder at a Chinese Drugstore along Ongpin. We were really amazed when we applied it on our sweaty backs because the cooling effect of menthol is just so refreshing we couldn’t help but apply more on our chest and arms! Ever since we bought it, I’ve been trying to empty the can as fast as I can, applying powder three times a day, just so I can decoupage the whole thing and make it look more vintage. :) And I’m not even a powder person!

I’ll show you as soon as I get it done. For now, all I can say is that I am prickly heat-free. LOL

Look how pretty it is when you open the cover:

So cute right?! :)

It was too bad we went to Chinatown on a Sunday when Carvajal and so many other shops were closed. Mr. Snuggles and I will surely be back and this time, we’ll be specifically following the route I made. We tried following it last Sunday but there were so many closed shops we had to turn to 168 mall and Ylaya for the shopping. I’ll remember to take loads of photos next time of the food we ate. But just to give you a bird’s eye view, we had congee, loads of dumplings, noodles, buchi, sugar cane juice, fried siopao and many more. A bag of Machang, Kikiam, Asado was also brought home. Our tummies were stuffed!

I’m sharing with all of you the Binondo Chinatown Food Tour route I made. It’s just a suggested route but my family and I have tried most of them, not to mention that many foodies have recommended the places as well. :)

Enjoy your walk! :)

Japanese Surplus Shop Finds

Being a trinket-lover, Mr. Snuggles and I have always fancied shopping in thrift stores.

It never crossed our minds that a nearby Japanese Surplus Shop would pose as an exciting place. My sole intention in visiting that place was because of the takoyaki pan I’ve been itching to buy for my soulmate’s birthday. Sadly though, their pans were out of stock as they were selling them at a super cheap price of P200-P300 only (and to think I was ready to buy a P1000 pan, you can just imagine my dismay when I knew that the last piece was sold a few days ago!).

Luckily, there were other great stuff in store for us. For just P50, we got all these:

And what are those? Well, the two big boxes are sort of a treasure hunting toy. And the two little boxes wrapped in Japanese gift wrapper is like a small token that you can give to someone. We’re just guessing here because I don’t know how to read the Japanese labels. :) But anyway, here’s what’s inside these cheap surplus finds:

I’m glad Mr. Snuggles and I went on a cheap yet fun date tonight. :) Local finds “rock”. LOL.
