Felt Card Holder

Last week I mentioned something about the felt projects I’ve been so into and today, I will finally show you one of the few felt projects that I’ve been doing.

But before that, I think a little introduction on why I chose this little project is in order. :)

A friend of mine posted this on her wall on Facebook:

Long story short, I joined the chain and this was the first project I did for two people who commented on my post. :) They were Gino and Mr. Snuggles and since they’re practically like the “wonder twins” (I think they refer to these superhero twins because they both have similarly acquired such amazing physique! lol) I thought I’d give them something twin-ish. :)

Now, onto some tutorial!

1. Start by downloading the Felt Card Holder Pattern and print the file on an 8.5 x 11 inch plain paper.

2. Cut out the pattern and use it as a cutting guide for your felt

3. For each pattern, cut two pieces of felt (one for the front and one for the back)

4. Layer them all (just like the photo below) and sew on all three sides, leaving the top area open.

It’s that easy!

Now they have a small card holder with a partition in the middle for some cash. I told the boys they could use these when they go to the nearby market or somewhere they’d rather not bring their whole wallet. :)

30-day Crafting Frenzy #29: Baby Felt Shoes

I made this for my 2-month old nephew, Iko. I haven’t seen him since the day after he was born and I’ve only been seeing him through my cousin’s photos on Facebook. And to think they live relatively near us. Shameful, I know. :)

So I thought I’d make it up to him by giving him my first ever self-designed infant felt shoes! I saw one being sold online and thought ‘Hey, I could make that! Looks pretty easy to me!’. Well, my overzealous ego went ahead of me and so I went straight to designing my own pattern. I had a photo of an infant shoe that was knitted and at that time I terribly wished I knew how to knit! Of course, I’ve already listed this on my Things-To-Accomplish-In-This-Lifetime notebook but I have yet to learn how to properly sew before I begin knitting. I promise to get to knitting soon. Anyway, going back to my nephew Iko’s shoes, I did not do any measurements. I am hoping his feet hasn’t grown yet and that it would fit in the tiny pair I made.

The pattern I made was totally hand-drawn and there were no measurements so as of now, I can’t provide you with a pdf file. Yes, my overzealous self got  to me and I guessed the whole thing. LOL.  What I did was figure out how they made it, drew my pattern on paper, cut them out and tried fitting them together. When I saw  section that’s a bit off, I’d quickly snip them off which is why it looks a little imperfect right now. Sometimes I just want to get the idea out and I can’t wait for it to be perfectly perfect and so I just go ahead and try making it. No matter what the outcome is, I’m sure it will still look great!

Anyway, I still can’t believe I did not Google it! That would have made things easier because now, I am seeing a couple of nice patterns that are free to download.

Some of these can be downloaded straight here @ www.greatturtle.com and here @ www.homespun-threads.com. I think the Kimono shoes from Homespun Threads are super easy especially with the pattern and all. lol.

Here’s how I made my Baby Felt Shoes:

1. Acquire some felt.

2. Cut out your pattern. My cutting looks awful. LOL. From left to right: back panel, front panel, sole.

3. Stitch the edges together. I seriously don’t know what this stitch is called but I will research it for you.

Hold on.

*2 minutes later*

Okay, so I Googled it and found that it is called blanket stitching. I used this stitch because I saw this sort of style being used on a lot of felt projects. I didn’t know what it was called but I figured it was a pretty basic design. After researching it on Google, I found that the steps I used in stitching was correct! Hmmm… I do love figuring things out by myself most of the time. :)

For those of you who are not familiar on how to do a basic blanket stitch:

Here’s how it looked after hand-stitching the front panel.

4. Stitch the back panel. Try to center it. :)

5. Make 2 slits on the top flap and insert a half inch strip of felt.

6. Make a few straight line stitches on the inner side of the shoe to hold the felt strap in place. Sew a button on the other side. Make sure the button is on the outer side.

Don’t they look cute? I am sending it over to my cousin today and she will be receiving it hopefully tomorrow (I can’t believe I will be making use of our local courier to send this to her when she’s like 30 minutes to an hour away from my house). While she might be reading my post and risk revealing to her my little surprise, I’m sure she’ll be all giddy for the package. :) Teehee.

Iko, I know the shoes are not perfect and they’re not actually meant for real walking and wearing outdoors when you go “lakwatsa” with Mommy, but I hope you’ll wear them at home where your Ate Iki, Daddy, Lolo Lola and Lola will see it. :P

30-day Crafting Frenzy #22: Damask-Printed Canvass Curtains

I was being a lazy lady these past few days which was why it took me a while to post this. LOL. :P

Anyway, our old curtains were literally destroyed by my kittens. My furry babies just love climbing out of our windows through the curtains and their sharp claws tore the cloth and ruined it. Well, they’ve done it a couple of times now so I’m always going for cheap and sort of disposable type of curtains.

Check out our new damask-printed canvass curtains:

I’ve been fancying these damask prints for quite some time and these curtains were some kind of an excuse for me to get them printed. I have stenciled these prints onto really cheap canvass cloth using textile paint. Because of my excitement, I was not able to iron the curtains out before I tried it on our window so this explains the really ruffled look. haha. But I think I love the un-ironed look so I am keeping it that way. It looks natural and more raw for me.

I bought the canvass cloth at a textile shop in Fort Bonifacio and it was for only P50 for a yard with a width of 60. Sweet deal.

I miss my Ma on days like this because she buys cloth like she does our grocery. She has sewn many of my clothes when I was a kid and I miss wearing her designs. She was the one who taught me how to sew. Although I haven’t sewn anything grand like a summer dress (yes, for me this is grand because it’s hard to sew something like this!), I have tested my talent with fisherman pants and it turned out pretty good. I will post it next time.
